Hooked For A Cause's mission is to put a smile on children's faces through vibrant colorful hand made hats and blankets made by people that not only Love them, but pray for their speedy recovery and that they feel as special as we know they are! I have a passion for crochet and there is no other feeling than that of seeing the joy on a child's face when they see what new hat or blanket they have made just for them.
Its like seeing a Christmas tree light up for the first time. Pure happiness! Being in the hospital can be a scary and sometimes lonely place, even with amazing nurses and staff doing everything they can to make you comfortable.
Lets give them a security blanket created with loving hands and distribute them to sick children to provide love, a sense of security, warmth, and comfort. For any local or neighboring communities, you know how important Children's hospital is to our children, and many surrounding. It is the 10th busiest pediatric center in the US! It is the states ONLY level 1 pediatric trauma center, the only renal care center and the largest pediatric burn center in the Southeast and one of the largest pediatric centers in the nation!
The UAB Division Of Pediatric Hematology & Oncology at Children's Hospital is Alabama's single largest provider of specialized pediatric services for all forms of cancer, leukemia, brain and spinal tumors, hemophilia and other blood disorders like sickle cell diseases.
Children's treats 95% of the children in Alabama diagnosed with childhood cancers and blood disorders and offers the ONLY pediatric bone marrow transplant program in the state.
So while we hope that we never have to face the unthinkable.....
Know that Children's is more than equipped and more than happy to take care of our children should the need arise.
**The mission** to make/collect as many baby--child and young adult beanie/hats as possible.--make/collect as many throw blankets to take to the Children's hospital as possible.

How Hooked For a Cause came to be.

Hi, my name is Gwen.I live in Elmore Alabama.Thirty years young.God has blessed me with a wonderful husband Keith and son Nicholas. We wish to expand our family but that's in Gods time. Until then I greatly enjoy all my time with Nicholas and all my wonderful nieces and nephews and some kids i just claim as mine.:-) Which brings me to my recent crocheting. Surrounded by all these wonderful children and a crafty hobby like making funny and artistic beanie hats for them. Like the Viking Mohawk  hat I made for my son in his school colors. Or the Alabama football themed beanie for my nephew. Whatever I am making the reaction is always the same. Their little faces light up like the fourth of July and instantly my heart is puddy in their hands. The pure joy that they get out of having something created just for them. And it being theirs. They walk around showing off there new hats  to everyone with such a shine on there faces. Or the blankets they snuggle with at night that was crocheted for them. My son in particular will NOT go to sleep without his "WOOBY" Its a Auburn blanket I crocheted years back for him. It is his security blanket. I'm not sure exactly what it is about that blanket that soothes him so much. But it does.
As sitting in my recliner crocheting a hat for a friends baby. I cant explain what came over me. You know there are some ideas that just POP into your head and your like OH WOW yeah ok I should try that...... and then there is things that just kinda come from the gut. It just came to me. As if my heart was telling it to my head or something.
" You should give these to sick children and brighten their day just as they brighten so many children in your life."
And that's when all the wheels started turning and haven't stopped yet!  I have NEVER EVER organized or put together ANYTHING like this. EVER! I had no idea where to start or what to do. Or most importantly "HOW AM I GOING TO DO IT??" " Where will i get that much supplies?" So I did the only thing I knew to do. PRAY! For I knew in my heart it was God that put that on my heart to begin with and I knew that if I asked him.... he would show me a way. Or at least give me a gentle nudge in the right direction. So i set off with this idea to make the vibrant beautiful beanie hats and throw blankets for the children at Children's hospital.
Why Children's? Well I wanted to reach children.....Those that are in need of lifting up and cheering up. And it comes easy for me to know exactly where to find such children. Cause you see I personally have a trail of loved ones that are frequent patients at children's hospital.
Starting with my cousin who years ago had major surgery there. (details to come pending her permission) And my niece who has a undeveloped bladder and keeps kidney infections. Then there is my nephew who has downs and was born with holes in his heart and at 4 months old had a triple bypass and that alone amazed me at the strength these little ones truly have. These little babies you cradle with such care and tenderness. To see the extent of what strong fighters they really are before they even know what they are fighting for.
So to be able to brighten a child's day his or her mood even if only for a moment. I like to think that a beautiful throw at the foot of a little girl or little boys bed will bring happiness and joy knowing it was made just for him or her and will always remain theirs.
So i set out on a mission and I will not stop! For I know that God would not have put it on my heart if he wasn't going to see me through it. He is going to see to it that this becomes a reality. Ideas popped into my head and I've just been following them.
